Photodynamic therapy, also known as PDT is a procedure that treats a combination of skin conditions. It is especially helpful for removing pre-cancerous spots (actinic keratosis); treating acne, pigmentation and improving skin texture and pore size.
- any area of the body can be treated
- healthier-looking skin
- minimal downtime
- scarring has never been reported
- Sunspots
- Acne
- Rosacea
- Certain types of skin cancer
- Sun Damaged skin
- Uneven Skin Tone
Photodynamic skin rejuvenation utilizes intense pulsed light in conjunction with Levulan, also known as aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Levulan is applied topically to the area being treated and is left on the skin to “incubate” and then activated with the intense pulse light which produce oxygen that destroys the target cells.
PDT usually consists of 2 to 4 treatments at three to four week intervals. After the treatment, you can expect the skin to look mildly red, swollen, itchy or even sunburned. This redness can be expected to last for a few days.
After PDT you can expect the skin to be more even colored tone, smaller pore size, smoother texture, and restore a more youthful, smoother healthier looking skin.
Patients that have had a PDT treatment should avoid sunlight for the first 48 hours. We strongly recommend you stay at home for this period and avoid bright indoor lights. Exposure to light may result in longer recovery time, burning, redness or swelling of the skin.
